S U N D A Y S I N S I N G A P O R E
After a busy week, there’s something grounding about spending a Sunday surrounded by nature, and one of the best places to reconnect with the power of plants is Singapore’s Botanic Gardens.
The UNESCO World Heritage site, right in the heart of the city, is a place where history, nature, and science intertwine. It’s 82 hectares is home to over 10,000 species of tropical flora, including iconic collections of gingers, palms, and the world’s largest orchid display.
Beyond its beauty, the gardens also immerse visitors in Singapore’s rich forest ecosystems and conservation history.
Connecting with Nature
Housed in Gallop House No. 5, Singapore’s oldest surviving colonial bungalow, is the Forest Discovery Centre is not only an airconditioned respite in the gardens but also teaches Singapore’s forests, their biodiversity, and the importance of conserving these precious ecosystems. Designed by Regent Alfred John Bidwell, the architect behind iconic Singapore landmarks like Raffles Hotel and Victoria Memorial Hall, the bungalow built in 1898, is a lovely little place to explore.
Family-friendly and thoughtfully designed, the Forest Discovery Centre’s small interactive exhibition brings to life the rich biodiversity in Singapore and the historical role the Singapore Botanic Gardens played in conserving them.
